Mariko Gray
Master of Art

This work examines death and mourning in human cultures, taking into account Mariko’s Japanese-Australian background, as well as her immersion in the age of social media. Combining the phenomenon of Facebook memorialisation post-death with the Buddhist spirit boat processions to send off the souls of the deceased, the work imagines a future in which the artist has died by suicide. Her digital legacy floats freely like her chaotic emotions, in a symbolic sending off of the soul.
