Scars and Other Imperfections evolved from Janet Mitsuji’s participation in an artist’s retreat at Fowlers Gap, 1400 km west of Sydney earlier this year. Focusing on the textural idiosyncrasies of river gum trees, the artist celebrates the beauty of her subject’s scars and imperfections through collage. The artist’s own fair-skinned struggle to cope with the Australian climate found a parallel in nature. Indeed, the ripped and layered paper gives one the impression of bark or skin.
