Cracked: Embracing the Broken
Xanthe Murphy’s design practice investigates how user driven personalisation can quickly generate history and emotive significance for an object. It is concerned with highlighting the prevalence of throwaway mentalities in our society, as a means to combat the mass consumption and premature disposal of broken ceramic items in the home. ‘Cracked' reveals the benefits of implementing modern repair techniques into the domestic sphere through education, specifically using a modern adaptation of Kintsugi, a traditional form Japanese repair using gold.
