Dialects that Bind Us
Drawing on her cultural and ethnic roots, Meha Goenka’s 'Dialects that Bind Us' is a dialogue between the states of her home country, India. Goenka expresses the interrelation between states through the spoken and written language while referencing the traditional folk art of India, Warli. Derived from an attempt at self-discovery, Goenka is interested in connecting the thread which runs through the country, while focusing on the many Indian languages that are so diverse yet so specific to each community. This single-channel animation combines Indian languages and symbols into what appears to be a traditional Warli painting, however upon deconstruction it becomes a mix of alphabets from each language that come together to form the image.
