‘The Missing Middle,’ explores the experience of the home, challenging the traditional conventions of a family sized house in the northern suburbs of Sydney. With the aim of enhancing a progressive society, the project demonstrates a speculative approach in design solutions to promote social interactions and develop a sense of community with neighbouring households. The demand for housing in Sydney’s northern suburbs is high, with only two main types of housing available; low-rise, free-standing houses and high-rise apartments. In this project Kayla Wilson highlights the gap in northern suburbs housing options, considering the missing choice of medium density sized homes.
