Sailor
Jake Alexander Cruz's practice draws on his personal lived experiences as a queer male. His works deal with identity including both self-identity and identities placed by others. Cruz examines homophobic inequalities and makes use of humour, irony, and vibrant colours as an expression of strength and a means of reclamation. Using illustration to pay homage to the significant historic role comic illustration held for queer art, Cruz's works are often heavy with coded meaning presented in a lighthearted, playful manner.
