Like mother, like daughter
Hyun Jee Cho's body of work examines the discourse surrounding cultural identity and displacement. Her video reveals the interactions and conversations while craft-making between herself, her mother and grandmother. This work demonstrates how intergenerational collaboration through craft-making reinforces a connection to and understanding of familial and cultural values. The hand-held camera enhances intimacy through free-flowing movement, as if by human observation. Cultural exchange occurs through observational learning and interpersonal interactions. The documentation of such interactions reveals the complexity of understanding culture through translation, communication and body language.
