In her short film ‘Masala’, Tarana Purohit explores the amalgamation of cultures by merging features of Bollywood and Hollywood films. She further interrogates the lack of LGBT representation as well as the dominance of patriarchal society that is often depicted in Bollywood films; families are shown to have strict values that must be followed by their children, in particular, daughters. In this short film, when a marriage is arranged for the protagonist, the father has to make a decision about whether she should be allowed to be with the one she loves.
