Creating Culture
This project discusses the potential restrictions placed on individuals when they identify with, or are labelled as belonging to, a minority (or majority) cultural group. The notion of an ‘assigned identity’ is encouraged by the multiculturalist ideology which maintains societal divisions between cultural groups. In this project, Olivia Pilot instead promotes a cosmopolitan attitude, celebrating the cultural hybridity that gives individuals the freedom to experience belonging without being bound to a single cultural community. Pilot's final project was designed using a range of materials and techniques drawn from cultures or groups which she considers to have a played a role in shaping her own cultural identity.
