Cause and Effect
Julie Toke’s works explore themes relating to transformation, particularly the 'cause and effect' relationship between humans and the ecosystem. Through the use of material associations, metaphor and re-contextualisation, she harnesses object agency or ‘thing power’ to convey affective and insightful messages highlighting notions of fragility, balance and sustainability. Using porcelain for old-ice, recycled glass for melting ice, and coal to represent fossil fuel consumption and the consequential increased CO2 emissions, Toke links these materials to the ecological changing states of the polar regions. This work quantifies the comparative amount of greenhouse gas produced by incandescent and compact fluorescent globes as well a light emitting diodes (LEDs), connecting the effect of coal usage with melting polar ice and subsequent rising sea levels. Through this project, Toke aims to engender a psycho-behavioural ‘changing state’ that fosters ecological stewardship.
