The Space In Between
Isobella Davenport's sculptural work 'The Space In Between' explores the tension created between two magnets constantly pulling towards each other yet never connecting. The sculpture is constructed from two shells of individually hand fabricated copper embedded with magnets which are suspended mid-air with string. While the two shells pull towards each other, the string prevents them from connecting, causing the shells to rotate and vibrate in reach of each other. As the invisible yet palpable magnetic force exerts its influence, there is a constant tension that threatens to sever the connection between the objects. Through this work, Davenport illuminates both the bond and separation in the literal space between the shells, as well as exploring the spaces between object and audience, and the space in between dialogues of scientific knowledge and design processes.
