Crisis and the Curatorial: Tracing Emergent Forms of Institutional Practice in Athens
Practices of socio-political organisation have been radically reimagined following the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, triggering alternative infrastructures and models of self-instituting. This thesis examines the social and economic conditions of Athens during the subsequent decade, and the imbrication of surrounding socio-political movements with emergent curatorial methodologies. I specifically consider the initiatives of State of Concept and the 4th Athens Biennale as a way to address collectivity and entrepreneurialism as resistant strategies to hegemonic and neoliberal power structures. By shifting from a Eurocentric analytic framework and examining locally-produced definitions and conditions of instituting, this thesis maps and analyses the characteristics of emergent practices that have taken place in the peripheries of artistic metropoles, expanding the scope of current institutional discourse.
