'WakeUp!’ questions and reframes our increasing use of single-use takeaway coffee cups by utilising storytelling and collaborative practices within an educational framework as mechanisms for sense making. The free 'WakeUp!' cups engage with craftism tactics and embrace Wabi-sabi aesthetics as a subtle metaphor for mindfulness and the trace of the designer’s hand. The floor piece responds to a collaborative student exercise where the environmental impact of single-use containers was equated to damage inflicted by chemical warfare. The individual nature of each cup acts in opposition to the manufactured, industrialised form of the takeaway coffee cup and encourages the user to reconnect with the tactile nature of ceramic materiality.
