Unsettled: a colonial anxiety
‘Unsettled: a colonial anxiety’ explores the complexities of the European relationship with the Australian landscape through the lens of colonisation. The foreboding sense of the ‘unknown’, unease and discomfort that was felt in this harsh new land is embodied in the voids and contrasts of the chair. Through site-specific design research, the form, texture and colours of the Snowy Mountains become incorporated into the designed object. Felted Merino and Alpaca fleece (introduced species) exemplifies the smothering impact of colonisation.
